Children's Art in Vienna Exhibition

Twelve children's drawings/paintings from the ICAE collection are included in the new exhibit Salon der Angst, September 6, 2013 - January 1, 2014. The pieces are from Al-Mansour Pediatric Hospital (2001) and from Al-Ghazolia Refugee Camp, (Baghdad, 2004) We gratefully acknowledge the cooperation of Drs. Salma Al-Haddad and Mazin Al-Jadiry. Fear and anxiety are familiar to all. Salon der Angst will not only focus on generalized feelings of insecurity and threat, but also on how culture shapes both individual and collective experiences of fear and fearful events. Depictions of fear, terror and the distraught are well-tread in art history, but also characterize a younger generation's artistic practice that responds to a contemporary society rife with new and specific fears and insecurities.
The exhibition Salon der Angst explores the artistic confrontation with the fears of our time across a broad affective and socio-political spectrum. Fear is here understood as a response to those aspects of the present that we do not know how to dela with it. The artists in this exhibition address these fears in terms of a history of ideas, but also their specific psychological manifestations. The preoccupation with fear and anxiety in art therefore turns out to be an exacting look at the treatment (and production) through the media of a human emotion at once both familiar and elusive. ReSTART: 3rd Sharjah International Biennial for Children’s Arts 2012
With the evolution and the multiplicity of the forms of visual expression around the world, it is necessary to pay attention to the place of children in these new expressive realms. This awareness is integral to our aim with ReSTART--the 3rd Sharjah International Biennial for Children’s Arts 2012—to be held under the patronage of HH Sheikha Jawahir bent Mohammad Al Qassimi, Chairwoman of the Supreme Council for Family Affairs.
The Biennial will feature the intersection of multi-cultural creativity, particularly with a focus on children living between two cultures and two worlds, in order to create diverse bridges, and colorful visuals. The event acknowledges an emerging importance for children with special needs who are also enriching all art forms. In addition to the traditional arts of drawing and colored painting, which we will use as a guide to new vital experiences, it is our intention to open the doorway to modern experiences in order to give all children the opportunity to express and show patterns of new knowledge. Through encounters with new media, non-traditional surfaces, installation, photography, video, and computer graphics, the interaction bridges the gaps between generations. Consequently, the Biennial is also an opportunity for grownups to learn and nurture the mechanisms of expression of the child.A short video produced during the exhibit is online at
